Interview: Artist, Kelly Maker

March 20, 2018

You've seen her iconic collages on Instagram and on the pages of Vogue magazine, featuring 90s supermodels in glitter bikinis, psychedelic animations and mashups of our favourite fashion images and celebrities.

We spoke to Kelly Maker for our Strong Women Interview Series, about her inspirations, influences and what's on the horizon for this talented digital artist.

Nickname: Kel

Star Sign: Pisces

My personality in three words….
Excessive, creative, & introverted

Where I call home...
Melbourne is my home, I live close to the South East coast currently in the same house I’ve lived in since birth, so when I move closer to the city later this year its going to be quite a change. I won’t stray far from the beach though!

What I do for a dollar...

Art, photography, anything creative that I can do and do well.

A favourite memory from my childhood…
Traveling with my family. We always went to the coast in Melbourne, surfing, or up north to Queensland beach hopping. My parents love to hike and explore so my memories are littered with different beaches, kayaks, surfing, bush trails and so much more.

Right now I am inspired by
The weather always inspires my work. Gloomy days dictate different art to sunny days. I’m also heavily influenced by photography and art books, plus model and creative biographies. Brassai, Jerry Hall, Grace Coddington, Purienne etc

I am currently reading…
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simpsion

My favourite wardrobe item...
A blue faux fur coat I bought on a whim two years ago from a European store who’s name I can’t remember. It’s the most expensive item I own and I almost never wear it. This probably adds to the allure of it because it sits there in its protective bag and I only take it out for extra special occasions. Plus it’s so soft inside and out.

A strong woman I admire...
My mother of course. She taught me strength in my convictions, never to give up on my dreams even when those dreams seem unattainable and to always have a back up plan. Most of all she taught me the importance of family and never taking for granted the people in your life who love you no matter what.

The best advice I have ever received was...
This is not verbatim but my dad once said to me something along the lines of, ‘do what you want and go all the way, if it works out, great, if it doesn’t at least you know you tried’

My favourite song to get me on the d-floor...
Anything by Rhianna or something old school.

A quote that I live by...
A French proverb ‘Qui n’avance pas, recule’ which roughly translates to ‘who does not move forward, recedes’. I like it because there is no sense in remaining stagnant in life and when you do you often find yourself moving backwards. Essentially you must evolve or devolve and I prefer to evolve.

I am looking forward to…
This year I have signed on with a new management agency and together we have lots of exciting projects coming up. Expect to see a lot more of my art in physical form rather than just digital.
